Poe Remembered
Edgar Allan Poe's original funeral was very small, considering that Poe's cousin failed to inform anyone of Poe's death. Even though he was one of the most famous American authors of the time, his funeral consisted of less than ten guests and lasted less than five minutes, since the priest didn't bother to give a sermon. 160 years later, the celebrated author and poet received a proper funeral hosted by the city of Baltimore. The ceremony was held as part of a year long series of events to mark Poe's 200th birthday. The ceremony was the length of two, and a recreation of the body was buried in the Westminster Burying Ground in front of 700 admirers. Edgar Allan Poe finally received this long- awaited funeral on October 11, 2009.
