When Poe is mentioned in modern society today, not only are his published works discussed, but his mysterious death and the mysteries that occur in modern times involving Poe's death. When Edgar's beloved, young wife Virginia died at the age of 25, Poe was heartbroken. Immediately after her funeral occurred, Edgar fell ill. Closer to his death, Edgar suffered from alcoholism and depression, even attempting suicide once. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849 at the age of forty. Four days prior, Poe was found half conscious, lying in a gutter, not wearing his own clothes. He was taken to a hospital and never gained enough consciousness to give an explanation before his death. Even today, what caused his death still sparks debate. There is also the mystery of the "Poe Toaster". The unofficial nickname refers to a masked figure who visits Poe's grave every year in the middle of the night. Every year they leave three roses and a bottle of Cognac on his grave. There have been many attempts to unmask the figure, but no one has ever succeeded. The "Poe Toaster" is rarely seen or photographed and has been appearing at the grave site ever since 1949, a century after Poe's mysterious death.
