Fame & Fortune
Edgar Allan Poe didn't achieve fame and fortune until later and life, and tended to frequently lose the money he made. Poe didn't even get a job until he was twenty six, a full eight years after he chose his career as a writer, and had to join the army to support himself. Poe received much of his money from contests that he won and once or twice suing a newspaper for libel rights. He did make money on some of his more famous titles, but the majority of his works did not get published, especially during the first eight years of his career. By the time of his unfortunate and mysterious death, Poe had become one of the most famous American authors, even though most of his life he was in debt or barely supporting himself.
