Education & Military Experience

Edgar Allan Poe attended schools in Richmond and England before enrolling in the University of Virginia on February 14, 1826. There he received good grades, but created debts that his adopted father did not approve of. After forbidding Edgar from returning to the University, Poe left without any money and went to Boston. In Boston, Poe published his first book of Poetry, Tamerlane and Other Poems. Not long after, Edgar enlisted in the army as a private under the false name of Edgar A. Perry. After spending two years of service and becoming Sergeant-Major, Mr. Allan helped to discharge Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar then went to live in Baltimore. The first part of Poe's writing career was not very successful as he could never support himself after leaving the University of Virginia.
