Early Career in Writing and Magazines

Shortly after Edgar Allan Poe dropped out of the University of Virginia he began his work as an author and poet, publishing works that made him famous in the world today. After he moved to Boston in 1827, Poe published his first book of poetry, Tamerlane and other Poems. Poe soon enlisted in the United States Army when he couldn't support himself. After attending West Point and deliberately getting kicked out, Poe submits a number of stories to magazines and they are all rejected. Eventually, Poe sent a desperate letter to his foster father pleading for assistance, and was ignored. The following year John Allan died, leaving Edgar nothing in his will. Not until he was twenty six did he finally receive a job after winning a contest for "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle". The beginning of Edgar Allan Poe's writing career didn't take a successful turn until he was 26 years old, eight years after he began writing as a profession.
