Before Becoming a Published Poet and Author

Edgar Allan Poe lived a life that was often marred by his issue of drinking and his unfortunate habit of losing money. Early on, his carelessness with money caused him to drop out of the University of Virginia and move to Boston, away from his adopted family, the Allans. Poe created debts while at the University with Mr. Allan's money that his adopted father did not approve of. This caused them to quarrel, and Edgar to moved to Boston with very little money. Even in 1845, Poe was working 14 hour days and he still couldn't make a living. Edgar Allan Poe also had problems with drinking. After his beloved wife, Virginia, died, Poe suffered from depression and drank excessively and even attempted suicide once. During the very last year of his life Poe joined the "Sons of Temperance" in an effort to stop drinking. Throughout his life, Poe had difficulties finding jobs and his published works didn't always make him a living. Even though famous today, most of Edgar Allan Poe's life was spent in debt.
